BPU announcement on change of governance structures
The Black Peoples Union (BPU) is pleased to announce an important milestone in our organisational journey. As of the most recent Annual General Meeting in August, Keiran Stewart-Assheton and Leah House are no longer serving as President and Vice President of the BPU. The general membership voted unanimously to dissolve the positions, marking the conclusion of a planned structural evolution in our organisation's leadership.
In alignment with our original vision, the BPU has transitioned to a collective leadership model. This new structure consists of a council body of First Nations executives, reflecting systems that resonate with pre-colonial governance. This change represents a meaningful step towards embedding community-led leadership practices within the BPU. We understand that leadership is influenced by cultural knowledge and community focus. The collective leadership model values culturally informed decision-making and sustainability to fight against the atrocities faced by our communities.
When the BPU was founded, a President and Vice President model was adopted to ensure the organisation's smooth establishment and effective operation during its first two years. This structure was always intended as a temporary measure to support the Union’s foundational phase. We extend our deepest gratitude and thanks to Keiran Stewart-Assheton, Leah House, Gulwanyang Moran, and the other founding executives for their exceptional leadership and dedication during the establishment of the BPU. Their contributions have been instrumental in building the strong foundation upon which the union now stands. As we move forward with this new leadership model, the BPU remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing the interests and liberation of First Nations communities. We are confident that this collective governance structure will enhance our ability to serve with integrity, inclusivity, and cultural resonance.
Thank you for your continued support as we embrace this exciting new chapter.
In solidarity,
The Executive Council
